He will discuss the decision process, physical modifications, and emotions behind bringing 120,000 students back into the classroom. Earlier this month -- a year after closing all school buildings -- the District began a phased reopening of some schools for the youngest PreK-2 learners. Later the reopening for older and complex-needs students, and expanded summer school to help everybody catch up is scheduled. That's the plan, anyway.
Dr. Hite has served as Superintendent of School District of Philadelphia since 2012. Under his leadership, the District has opened innovative high schools, expanded successful school models, launched in-district turnarounds, and partnered with communities in school redesign. It has survived financial crises and the handover of control from the Commonwealth to the City. Hite holds a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech, master's degree from the University of Virginia, and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. He and his wife Deirdre have two daughters and a grandson.
