In March 2008 Mayor Michael Nutter appointed Rina Cutler as Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities, creating a new position in City government responsible for coordinating all transportation functions in the City of Philadelphia, with oversight of City agencies including the Streets Department, the Philadelphia Water Department, the Philadelphia International Airport and the Philadelphia Gas Works. Prior to returning to Philadelphia, Ms. Cutler had been the Deputy Secretary for Administration at PennDOT since 2003. In addition, Ms. Cutler served for almost two years as the Acting District Executive in PennDOT for the five county Philadelphia region which was responsible for the areas of design, construction and maintenance responsibilities for State owned roads and bridges. Under the Nutter administration the City embarked on an ambitious agenda of rightsizing and modernizing its transportation infrastructure, while playing a more vital role in promoting regional cooperation. In addition the City has focused on issues like the future of the Philadelphia International Airport, and creating a more friendly city for pedestrians and bicyclists. Ms. Cutler will discuss the City's accomplishments and the future of its transportation agenda.
