The idea of creating a "public bank" owned by the City of Philadelphia has taken a lot of explaining, exploration, research, and more explaining, Its leading champion, Councilmember At-Large Derek Green, will address the proposal and other issues at PCCP's April 29 meeting. First elected in 2015 and now in his second term, Councilmember Green chairs the Council's Finance and Disabilities Committees and is the Vice Chair of the Aging and Law & Government Committees. He is the Chair of the Philadelphia Gas Commission, President of the Democratic Municipal Officials, and Past President of the PA Municipal League. Additionally, he serves on the Boards of the City Trusts, Philadelphia Cultural Fund, Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. Further, he serves on the DNC and National League of Cities Executive Committee. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Temple University School of Law, Derek previously served as Special Counsel to retired Councilmember Marian B. Tasco and held various legal positions before joining City Council. Derek and his wife, Sheila, co-founded the first Autism Support Class at Houston Elementary School to help other Autistic children like their son and they are a top regional fundraiser for Autism Speaks.
